Challenge

Create a jiu jitsu fighting app from zero to MVP.

Team Structure

1 Ux Designer, 1 Ui Designer, 1 Tech Lead, 1 Full Stack Dev, 4 Stakeholders

Principles Goals

Understand and design the user experience of the application aimed at the Jiu Jitsu, and develop a high-fidelity MVP for user testing.

Project Time

3 months, 2 meetings per week - 1:00 hour each session

My role

UX Designer, Product Manager

Discovery

The project began with meetings with stakeholders to understand their initial idea for gathering information, at this point I decided that there would need to be a significant discovery process that would include qualitative research and interviews with athletes in the sport.

  • Meeting with stakeholder to understand the principal idea.

  • Desk Research about Jiu-jitsu.

  • Desk Research about fights apps and similars such as Strava, Combate, Cartola FC.

  • 7 qualitative interviews with user profiles, 1 hour session, containing a mix of athletes, judges and jiu jitsu academy owners in order to understand their needs and concerns.

Ideation

After researching and conducting the qualitative interviews. I placed all the insights collected in Figjam so that I could be able to classify them and have a better perspective. I split the insights into the following profiles: Athletes, Judges and Jiu Jitsu Academy Owners.

Following the process, I categorised the insights, created an empathy map for each type of user and then created three personas.

Drafts

I started to make some drafts of what I imagined the app would be like.  I did some research on the industry to find references at the same time as the project's Ui designer was developing a mini design system to help us.

During this phase we had many meetings with the stakeholders to approve the flows and ideas for each stage.

User Tests

 I invited 5 potential users to test the mvp in order to validate the flows that had been designed so far. The tests took place remotely, using the Figma prototype. During the tests, we noticed that users had difficulty understanding how the rewards would work and also had doubts about canceling fights and financial losses.

Iteration Process

After testing with MVP, we have developed the app further, adding new flows and rebranding it.

Journeys added:

  1.  Judge registration
  2.  Editing judge registration data
  3.  Editing bank details Judge;
  4.  Academy registration;
  5.  Editing bank details Academy
  6.  Cancelling the Athlete subscription
  7.  Editing athlete registration data
  8.  Editing athlete's bank details
  9.  Editing card details
  10. MFA - 2-factor authentication
  11. Password change flow
